About Health And Education Relief Organization For Cancer (H.E.R.O.C.)
A non-profit corporation, founded in 2013 and incorporated in 2014, The Health & Education Relief Organization for Cancer, Inc. (H.E.R.O.C.) serves to extend a helping hand to communities and individuals affected with cancer, specifically Breast and Prostate Cancers. Special interest is given to Cancer in Guyana. According to the World Health Organization (W.H.O) 2014, Cancer is ranked in the top 25 cause of deaths in Guyana where there is limited access to the required health care for this dreaded disease. In 2015, 125 breast cancer cases were diagnosed and 46 cancer related deaths recorded at the Oncology Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. These figures are only based on the reported cases, since Guyanese are not vocal about having this disease.
The H.E.R.O.C. team which consists of twenty persons to date is comprised of health care professionals and non-medical members. The team is focused on providing assistance through education and awareness to promote early detection and screening, distribution of prosthetic bras and wigs, financial support and counseling and nutrition services for cancer patients and survivors. This organization works in collaboration with The Giving Hope Foundation in Guyana to provide its services to the cancer patients which forms part of the mission trips to Guyana.
Financial and other resources are obtained mainly from fund raising activities (such as Annual: Spring Tea Party in April, A Bingo evening in July and Guyanese Style Holiday Breakfast in December), private corporations, federal and State Governmental Agencies, individual patrons, through written solicitations and other non-for-profit organizations within the United States of America. H.E.R.O.C is actively involved in activities during October for Breast Cancer Awareness month, where they contribute to The American Cancer Society.
H.E.R.O.C. is a 501 (c) (3) Registered NY State Incorporation.
